In the Peshawar High Court, a bench comprising Justice Ijaz Anwar and Justice Farah Jamshed heard the petition related to the ban on Tik Tok. During the hearing, the lawyer of the petitioner, Barrister Babar Shehzad Imran, argued that objectionable videos are uploaded on Tik Tok, which is causing moral and social deterioration in the society.

He further told the court that he had earlier sought a report from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) regarding the firewall. PTA lawyer Jahanzeb Mehsud said that the required report has already been filed.

The PTA lawyer said that Tik Tok and other social media platforms use algorithms in such a way that if a user watches a certain type of content, similar content will continue to be displayed. He added that when the applicant wants control over specific content, it is very difficult to block only selected content.

He further told the court that the authority is working on the matter and several accounts have already been blocked based on the complaints received.

Justice Ijaz Anwar remarked that political posts are immediately blocked if the government wants to remove them, questioning why similar content cannot be controlled in the same way.

In response, the lawyer said that a separate body has now been set up to regulate social media.

He further said that Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority has been created to handle such cases. The petitioner’s counsel argued that if the government does not regulate Tik Tok, people may come in protest, so the new authority should also be asked to respond.

The court granted the request and adjourned further hearing of the case while seeking a report from the Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority.
