Prime Minister Shahbaz and Field Marshal will join world leaders, US-Iran technical talks to begin today in Switzerland
ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Chief of Defense Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir left for Switzerland to attend high-level talks aimed at advancing the implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The development comes after US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Pizshakyan electronically signed the Islamabad MoU extending the ceasefire in the US-Iran war, with Pakistan acting as a peace broker throughout the process.

The talks, held in Bergen Stock, mark the first formal engagement between Washington and Tehran since the signing of the deal on June 17. The deal is widely seen as a major diplomatic breakthrough after months of tensions that have destabilized the Middle East and raised concerns about global economic stability.
The Foreign Office (FO) said that the Prime Minister and Field Marshal Munir Islamabad are participating in discussions focused on converting the understanding reached under the MoU into practical measures. High delegations of America, Iran and Qatar are also participating in the talks. The deal provides a framework for de-escalation, including regional security measures, easing sanctions on Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for international energy trade.
The Foreign Office reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to promoting treaty implementation and negotiations as the preferred route for resolving complex international disputes.
Prime Minister Shehbaz is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with representatives of Iran, Qatar, Switzerland and the United States, reflecting Pakistan’s continued engagement with regional and global partners in support of peace and stability.
Diplomatic observers see Pakistan’s participation as an acknowledgment of its constructive role in the entire process. Islamabad hosted the first round of negotiations and maintained constant diplomatic contacts that led to the signing of the Islamabad MoU.
US Vice President JD Vance also made a hopeful trip to Switzerland ahead of the talks. Speaking to reporters before his departure, Vance said negotiators would focus on Iran’s nuclear program and efforts to strengthen the ceasefire in Lebanon, while hoping for meaningful progress on both fronts.
Senior US representatives Jared Kushner and Steve Wittkoff have already arrived in Switzerland to work on the technical aspects of the talks.
The Iranian delegation led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqir Ghalib and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi also reached Switzerland before the talks. The delegation includes senior officials of Iran’s national security, financial and energy sectors. The latest round of engagement is being closely watched internationally, with many seeing it as an opportunity to build on recent diplomatic gains and strengthen a framework for lasting regional stability.
