Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei vowed revenge after his father’s burial
TEHRAN – Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has vowed to avenge the killing of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in his strongest warning since taking power, declaring that retaliation against those responsible is “the demand of the nation.”
It coincided with nationwide funeral celebrations for the former supreme leader, who was killed in US-Israeli airstrikes, an attack that dramatically reshaped Tehran’s political leadership and heightened regional tensions.
In his written message, Mujtaba vowed that there would be no retaliation for the killings of his father and those he described as the two recent wars. “We pledge to avenge your pure blood and the blood of all martyrs,” he said, adding that revenge against “criminal” criminals is a national duty. He insisted that the Iranian people expected revenge and vowed that it would be “certainly carried out.”
The warning came as Iran wrapped up days of state funeral ceremonies by burying Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at Imam Reza’s mausoleum in Mashhad on Thursday. Thousands of mourners flooded the northeastern city, waving Iranian flags and chanting revolutionary slogans as the funeral procession made its way through packed streets to one of the holiest sites in Shiite Islam.
The crowd swelled to such an extent that the authorities were forced to transport the casket for the final leg of the journey by helicopter after the procession stopped. Later, the senior scholars offered the last funeral prayer at the mausoleum before burial.
The funeral capped a week of official mourning that included ceremonies in Tehran and Qom, as well as commemorative processions in Iraq’s holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. Four members of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s family, who were also killed in the February airstrike, were honored during the ceremony.
After assuming Iran’s highest office, Mojtaba has not been seen in public since the February 28 strike. Iranian authorities have released only written statements on his behalf, while no photos, videos or audio recordings have been made public. Reports suggest that he is recovering from injuries sustained in the attack and is under tight security.
