10-day US-Iran ceasefire proposal after days of escalating conflict

WASHINGTON – Global markets rallied after reports emerged that international mediators proposed a 10-day pause in hostilities between the United States and Iran to create diplomatic space to restore an interim deal.

A senior Iranian source told the World Wire Service that the proposal was aimed at restarting negotiations and de-escalating regional tensions.

Investors’ hopes rose on expectations that the easing of tensions could pave the way for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. The prospect of a smooth oil flow pushed crude prices down to around $80 a barrel, while the S&P 500 climbed as traders welcomed signs of a potential breakthrough.

However, the diplomatic picture is deeply divided. Reports suggest that Iran has rejected a US-backed secession proposal put forward by Qatari mediators. The reported framework calls for a 10-day suspension of US military strikes in exchange for Iran reopening two shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Senior Iranian negotiator Mohammad Marandi dismissed the recent proposals as “not even thinking about it,” confirming Tehran’s hardline stance.

Despite this, there are signs that diplomatic channels remain active. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai said any future talks with the US would only be considered if they were in line with Iran’s national interests, while confirming that mediators had continued to exchange messages with Tehran in recent days.

The conflicting signals highlight the uncertainty surrounding the latest mediation efforts. While financial markets are pricing in the prospect of an easing of tensions and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Tehran’s public stance suggests that no progress is guaranteed.
