PML-N Barrister Iftikhar Geelani elected 17th Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir

Muzaffarabad – Muslim League (N) leader Barrister Iftikhar Geelani was elected as the 17th Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir by getting 30 votes in the Legislative Assembly.

During the elections, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate Sardar Mukhtar Khan managed to secure only 14 votes, giving Geelani a clear lead in the race for the top constitutional post.

Muslim League (N) currently has 32 members in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, while elections are yet to be held for seven seats. Gilani’s victory marks a major development for the ruling party as the government formation process moves forward.

Barrister Iftikhar Geelani has previously served as the Education Minister of Azad Kashmir. He first entered the Legislative Assembly of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in 2011, when he was first elected as a member.

Gilani won the technocrat seat on a PML-N ticket, returning home as the party’s candidate for the top government post. His nomination was approved by the PML-N leadership during an important consultative meeting earlier.

Senior leaders including Rana Sanaullah, Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Shah Ghulam Qadir and Raja Farooq Haider participated in the government formation meeting.

Newly elected Speaker Chaudhry Tariq Farooq and Deputy Speaker Ahmad Raza Qadri and other senior party leaders also participated in the meeting.

The leadership expressed complete consensus on the nomination of Barrister Iftikhar Gilani, paving the way for his election as Prime Minister.

With Geelani’s election, an important phase of government formation in Azad Kashmir has now been completed, handing over the PML-N leader to head the state government.
