Sohail Chaudhry will take the lead as the new IGP of Islamabad as Rizvi holds the top NCCIA post.
ISLAMABAD – Sohail Chaudhry has been named as the new chief of Islamabad Police in place of Ali Nasir Rizvi, who has been made the head of the National Cyber ββCrime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).
The reshuffle comes at a critical juncture for Islamabad’s security infrastructure, with the capital’s police pursuing extensive modernization plans and the cybercrime agency looking for additional manpower to expand its operations.
Sohail Chaudhry brings a reputation to the capital for hard-edged field policing. A former Pakistan Army captain, he has handled some of Punjab’s most demanding law enforcement assignments, including CTO Lahore, CPO Faisalabad, DIG Operations Lahore, DIG CTD Punjab and RPO Multan.
His career has largely been built around operational policing, counter-terrorism and crime control. His strict attitude to discipline and aggressive stance against criminal activity earned him a reputation as a tough field commander, with some local reports referring to him as a “domineering” officer.
Chaudhry first gained national attention in 2021 when he was posted as DIG Operations Lahore following the high-profile Minar Pakistan harassment case. His subsequent posting as DIG Counter-Terrorism Department Punjab further strengthened his profile as a senior officer involved in sensitive security and counter-terrorism operations. Later he was transferred out of Punjab and posted as Officer on Special Duty (OSD).
His arrival in Islamabad comes at a time when the capital’s police are gearing up to operate under a technology-driven security model. A new AI-powered command and control system is being introduced in the federal capital to enhance real-time monitoring, surveillance and police response.
Rizvi’s move to NCCIA coincides with the agency’s efforts to strengthen its field strength. Islamabad Police has reportedly shortlisted 23 officers for deployment in the Cyber ββCrime Investigation Body as it sought additional manpower.
The proposed personnel are expected to be drawn from a wide range of Islamabad Police, including the Capital Patrol, Investigation Wing, Khitmat Center, Security Division, Counter-Terrorism Department, Police Emergency 15 and Anti-Car Lifting Cell.
The selected officers are expected to report to NCCIA headquarters on September 26, marking a significant workforce transition as the agency expands its investigative capacity.
