After the drone attack on the Saudi oil pipeline, Iraq fired the commander and ordered an investigation.

Iraq has launched an investigation into drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline, disciplining a senior military commander after investigators determined the drones came from Iraqi territory.

According to a statement from the Iraqi prime minister’s office, the commander responsible for the operation in Maysan province in southern Iraq was fired following the findings. Iraqi authorities have also ordered an investigation to identify those behind the attacks.

The development comes after Saudi Arabia reported that several drones launched from Iraq had targeted its east-west pipeline in the Riyadh and Medina areas. The attacks reportedly caused injuries and damaged infrastructure.

Saudi Arabia temporarily halted work on the pipeline as a precaution after the attacks. An official of the Saudi Ministry of Energy said that some people were injured as a result of this incident.

Iraq condemned the attacks as a threat to Saudi Arabia’s security and welcomed Riyadh’s decision not to retaliate immediately. Baghdad said its prime minister had instructed authorities to determine who was responsible for launching the drone.

As part of the security response, Iraq also ordered the temporary closure of the Shalamche border crossing between Iraq and Iran. Two security sources said Iraqi forces have launched a wide-ranging operation aimed at tracking down those responsible for the attacks.

The incident has heightened security concerns around Iraqi territory amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran.
