Motorway M-1 will be closed from September 23 as Islamabad braces for PTI protests.
ISLAMABAD – Travel between Islamabad and Peshawar is facing major disruption as the M-1 Motorway will remain closed for all traffic from 11 pm on September 23 until further notice, amid tight security preparations ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) demonstration in Islamabad on September 27.
According to the traffic advisory, motorcyclists traveling from Islamabad, Rawalpindi and other districts are advised to avoid M-1 and postpone non-essential travel till further notice.
The development comes as authorities step up preparations to control access to the federal capital ahead of the planned protests. According to reports, thousands of containers have been deployed at key locations in Islamabad and Attock, including key entry points and routes connecting the capital to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Reports said authorities have also placed containers at strategic locations including Attock Bridge, T Chowk Rawat, Faizabad, Serena Chowk, Srinagar Highway and Margalla Avenue, while additional barricades and other measures are being prepared on routes leading to Islamabad.
M-1 provides the main road link between Peshawar, Northern Territories and Islamabad-Rawalpindi. The leaders of PTI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have said that the party workers intend to reach Islamabad through several routes including the Motorway and GT Road.
Despite the closure of M-1, the advisory said that M-2 Lahore-Islamabad Motorway will remain open for all traffic.
Motorists are urged to plan their journey according to the latest traffic advisory, avoid unnecessary travel on the affected roads and strictly follow the instructions issued by the traffic police.
