Shahbaz Sharif became the first Pakistani Prime Minister to address the London Stock Exchange.
LONDON – According to Express News, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has become the first Pakistani Prime Minister to address an event held at the London Stock Exchange.
During his visit to London, Shahbaz Sharif visited the London Stock Exchange and attended the opening ceremony of the market, where he was received by London Stock Exchange Group CEO David Schwimmer and senior officials.
Addressing the ceremony, the Prime Minister said that it is an honor for me to be invited to the ceremony.
Shahbaz Sharif said that Pakistan has made significant efforts to strengthen its economy in recent years, adding that macroeconomic indicators are continuously improving.
He said that the issuance of $3 billion in Eurobonds is a clear indication of strengthening economic conditions, while the reissuance of bonds is an important step towards putting the economy on the right track.
Earlier during his visit to UK, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held separate meetings with senior executives of leading international financial institutions including Barclays, JP Morgan, Citi, Black Rock and Rothschild & Company in London.
The meetings focused on Pakistan’s economic reform agenda, macroeconomic stability, investment opportunities and enhancing cooperation with the international financial sector.
During a meeting with Mohammad Kamal Syed, Head of Private Bank and Wealth Management UK at Barclays, the Prime Minister welcomed the bank’s interest in Pakistan and invited him to explore investment opportunities in the country’s financial sector.
A high-level delegation from JP Morgan, led by Co-Chief Executive Officer Matthew Wiltz, discussed opportunities to enhance cooperation in capital markets, trade finance and investment banking. Shahbaz invited the bank to further expand its operations and presence in Pakistan.
The delegation expressed interest in Pakistan’s sovereign debt capital market and corporate banking sector.
In a meeting with senior Citi officials led by Chief Client Officer David Livingstone, Shahbaz appreciated the bank’s longstanding presence in Pakistan and encouraged it to expand its corporate and institutional banking services.
The Prime Minister also met Gordon Fraser and Sam Veitch, Co-Heads of Emerging Markets and Frontiers at BlackRock, along with portfolio manager and research analyst Emily Fletcher. He invited investment firms to increase their exposure to Pakistani equities and fixed income assets as part of their frontier markets strategy.
Both sides stressed the importance of policy continuity to strengthen investor confidence.
During the meeting with Rothschild & Co Chairman of Geostrategic Advisory, Lord Mark Sidwell and Majid Ishaq, Head of UK Investment Banking, Pakistan’s geo-economic priorities and possible advisory cooperation and investment strategies in capital markets were discussed.
Senior officials from international financial institutions expressed confidence in progress on Pakistan’s economic reform process and reiterated their commitment to strengthen cooperation and linkages with the country’s financial sector.
The meetings were described as increasing international interest in Pakistan’s economic reform program and efforts to attract sustainable investment.
Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb and Prime Minister’s Advisor on Privatization and Privatization Commission Chairman Muhammad Ali also attended the meetings.
