Dr. Waseem Qazi will lead Karachi University as the new Vice Chancellor for four years.
KARACHI – After the approval of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Professor Dr. Waseem Qazi has been nominated as Vice Chancellor of University of Karachi for a four-year term.
According to reports, the official notification of his appointment has also been issued by the Sindh Universities and Boards Department. Dr. Qazi emerged as the leading candidate when the search committee constituted for the appointment awarded him 86 marks, placing him ahead of two other shortlisted candidates.
Vice Chancellor of Government College University Hyderabad Dr. Moazzam Ali Khan secured 74 marks while Registrar of Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad Dr. Shafiqur Rehman secured 71 marks. The three candidates were later interviewed by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on 2 October 2026 before the final appointment was approved.
Dr. Qazi took over at an important time for the University of Karachi, where the post of Vice-Chancellor was vacant from July 28, 2026 after the completion of the second term of Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood Iraqi. During the interim period, NED University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Tufail Jokhio was given additional charge.
Who is Dr Wasim Qazi?
With over 3 decades of experience in higher education, Dr. Waseem Qazi comes to the University of Karachi after holding senior academic and administrative positions in several Pakistani universities. Prior to his appointment, he served as the founding Vice-Chancellor of Karachi Metropolitan University, a position he held since 2024.
He also served as President/Vice-Chancellor of Iqra University for two terms between approximately 2017 and 2023. His previous positions include Vice-Chancellor of Saifi Burhani University, Executive Director/Vice-President at Iqra University from 2004 to 2017, Adviser to Rector of Lahore University and Special Assistant to Chaudhry/Head of Lahore University. He has also been associated with the establishment and development of many higher education institutions including Hamdard University, University of Lahore, University of Faisalabad, Iqra University and Safi Burhani University.
Dr. Qazi received his PhD in Educational Administration from Hamdard University in 2002. He did MA in Philosophy from University of Karachi in 1994-95. His academic exposure includes postdoctoral and visiting scholar work at institutions including Eastern Kentucky University, Australian Catholic University and Western Michigan University in the United States.

His international academic affiliations include visiting professorships at Roma Tre University in Italy, Southwest Jiaotong University in China, and Eastern Kentucky University in the United States.
Dr. Qazi’s profile also highlights an outstanding record in research and scholarly publications. He is credited with more than 3,000 citations and an H-index above 25, including research and publications on management sciences, education and social sciences. He has also served as Editor of Journal of Management Sciences (JMS) and Journal of Education and Social Sciences (JESS).
One of the highlights of his professional record is his involvement in the development of university faculty. Associated teacher training initiatives have been undertaken with the support of organizations including the World Bank, USAID, the European Commission and Advance HEUK. It is reported that more than 20,000 teachers have been trained in these programs.
Dr. Qazi’s administrative record also includes efforts to integrate technology into university operations and teaching through systems such as Blackboard, SAP and the Learning Management System (LMS). Their work includes the development of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORICs), business incubation centers and academia-industry linkages.
