ISLAMABAD – For Pakistani users of EasyPaisa, a routine attempt to check balance or make a quick payment turned into frustration on Friday as customers found themselves locked out of their accounts.

The digital wallet platform with 22 million monthly active users is experiencing service disruptions as users are unable to access their accounts or complete transactions, causing frustration among users across the country.

According to available reports, users failed to login despite entering valid login credentials. The outage disrupted normal financial activities, with users unable to check balances, transfer funds or make digital payments through the platform.

Biometric authentication services, including fingerprint authentication, have reportedly stopped working for many users. While retailer and merchant accounts are functioning normally, a significant number of regular customer accounts are inaccessible, sources familiar with the matter said.

Amidst the complaints, EasyPaisa confirmed that some customers are experiencing intermittent service issues. The company said its technical teams are working round the clock to identify the issue and restore services as soon as possible. The cause of the outage or a timeline for full restoration has yet to be shared with customers.

The digital banking platform could be headed for a change in ownership as Norway’s Telenor ASA looks to sell its 55 percent controlling stake. Talks are reportedly in the early stages, with interest from potential investors expected in the coming months.

If the deal goes through, it would mark a major development for Pakistan’s fintech sector and would mark Telenor’s final exit from the country after selling its telecom operations to PTCL Group last year. Despite the uncertainty, EasyPaisa continues to operate as normal under State Bank of Pakistan regulations. Digital Bank has maintained strong growth, posted strong profits and expanded its footprint as one of the country’s most used financial platforms.

No buyer has yet been identified, and any transaction will require regulatory approval before moving forward.
