A flood alert has been issued across Punjab due to flooding in rivers and canals due to monsoon rains.

LAHORE – Heavy monsoon rains have raised water levels in rivers across Punjab, prompting the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to warn riverside residents to move to safer places immediately.

According to the situation report issued by PDMA Punjab, the flow of the river remained stable during the last 24 hours. However, low-level floods have been recorded at Kalabagh, Chashma and Taunsa in the Indus River.

PDMA reported inflows of 334,000 cusecs at Kalabagh, 370,000 cusecs at Chashma and 313,000 cusecs at Taunsa Barrage. Flooding in river Chenab has started receding, water level in Marala, Khanki, Kadirabad and Trimum is now at low level.

The water flow in Marala was recorded at 143,000 cusecs while in Khanki 138,000 and 135,000 cusecs in Kadirabad. Flow in trims was 184,000 cusecs.

Water levels in Sutlej and Jhelum rivers are normal. However, low-level floods were reported at Baloki and Sidhanai in the Ravi River, with flows recording 81,000 cusecs and 60,000 cusecs respectively.

The PDMA added that the flow of water at Shahdara and Head Sadhanai on Ravi river is normal. Meanwhile, Basantar Nala at Narowal is in medium flood, Pul Nala One is at low flood level and Phalgu Nala near Wazirabad is in high flood, with a flow of 5000 cusecs.

Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia said that the flow of the river has increased due to recent rains in the upper catchment areas. He said that the rain has now stopped in the upper reaches of the Chenab and the water level is receding during the last 24 hours.

He urged the residents living on the banks of the river to move to safer places immediately, adding that the Punjab government has completed all necessary arrangements in the flood-affected areas.

DGPDMA said that the relief camps are fully equipped with basic facilities and medicines. He advised citizens to take precautions, avoid recreational activities near rivers and canals, ensure use of quality boats and life jackets while crossing water bodies and keep children away from rivers, streams and drains.
