As the US-Iran conflict escalated in the Middle East, Pakistan included Tehran.
ISLAMABAD/TEHRAN – Pakistan on Sunday increased diplomatic relations with Iran. Tensions in the Middle East Amid fresh US military strikes and heightened security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, in which the two leaders discussed the worsening regional situation.
Dar urged all parties to de-escalate tensions and exercise maximum restraint. He also emphasized that the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), agreed in June 2026, emphasizes that dialogue and diplomacy are the only way to resolve conflicts and ensure lasting regional peace and stability. The two foreign ministers agreed to stay in close contact as developments continued.
Meanwhile, Iran’s chief negotiator and parliament speaker Mohammad Baqir Ghalib issued a stark warning: “The era of one-sided agreements is over. We told you: either honor your promises or pay the price for breaking them. The reality is now in front of you.”
Ghalib also shared a photo of Article Five of the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding, which highlights the provision that says Iran will provide safe passage for merchant ships traveling between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman for 60 days without charge.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) had earlier announced that the third phase of military operations against Iran was underway, citing the operation as a response to the attack by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the Cypriot container ship JFS Galaxy.
The U.S. military accused Iran of failing to comply with a memorandum of understanding despite repeated attacks on merchant shipping, saying Washington’s actions were aimed at reducing Iran’s ability to target civilian ships and commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. These attacks are being carried out under the direction of the US President.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai said talks between Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Omani officials in Muscat focused on coordinating navigation and shipping procedures in the Strait of Hormuz.
Baghai said that legal and technical delegations from both countries participated in the talks, which discussed maritime security while respecting the sovereign rights of the two littoral states, international law and obligations set out in Article Five of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
He added that Iran believes that any new traffic arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz should be developed jointly by Iran and Oman, taking into account the events of recent months, especially the war and its impact on maritime security along one of the world’s most important waterways.
