Boats on the streets of Rawalpindi as 230mm of monsoon rain broke a 16-year record
RAWALPINDI – Boats were seen plying on flooded roads in Rawalpindi after parts of Garrison City were inundated in the latest spell of torrential rains, breaking a 16-year-old record by a staggering 230mm.

According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), New Katarian recorded the highest rainfall of 230 mm, while Chaklala received 206 mm, Shamsabad 203 mm and Golra 157 mm.
The floods have raised concerns along Nalla Lai, prompting the PDMA to issue an alert to nearby residents and urge them to take precautionary measures. The authority said its control room was monitoring the situation 24 hours a day.
The rains have broken a 16-year-old record, the last comparison being recorded in 2010, said Muhammad Atiq, chief water engineer of the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board. He said that the cantonment areas received relatively less rain, while the upper reaches of Nala Lai received heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of downstream flooding.
The Cantonment Board has put all the staff on high alert on the instructions of its Executive Officer. Officials said that no emergency has been reported so far.
For immediate response, an emergency center has been set up where residents can seek round-the-clock assistance. The cantonment has also been divided into six zones, flood relief camps have been set up in all the zones.
Officials said that every call received at the control room is being processed immediately as officials keep a close eye on the evolving situation.
