The Iranian government said the two officials discussed the latest developments in the region during the call.

According to the statement, the talks also covered issues of mutual interest between Iran and Pakistan.

The call came while Araqchi was in Beijing, where Iran’s foreign minister is engaged in diplomatic contacts amid developments in the region.

A day earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged Iran and the US to exercise restraint and resume talks, urging both sides to return to the framework established by the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

Wang said this during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi in Beijing on Wednesday.

The Chinese Foreign Minister said that Beijing is ready to play a constructive role in international conflict resolution efforts as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Describing China and Iran as comprehensive strategic partners, Wang said Beijing is ready to deepen cooperation with Tehran and support China’s legitimate rights and interests.

He warned that a prolonged conflict between Iran and the US would not serve the interests of the countries involved or the wider international community.

Wang encouraged Tehran and Washington to restructure their negotiating mechanisms around areas where compromises have already been reached and engage in substantive discussions on outstanding issues.

The Chinese foreign minister stressed the importance of safe international shipping and uninterrupted transportation of energy, and called for measures to ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible.

China also expressed fears that the regional conflict could spread to Yemen and the Red Sea. Wang urged the parties involved to avoid actions that could further complicate the situation and instead pursue dialogue and diplomatic negotiations to resolve their differences.
