Corruption of 20 billion rupees has been revealed in the Labor Department, Saeed Ghani

KARACHI – Sindh Labor Minister Saeed Ghani has said that corruption worth more than Rs 20 billion has taken place in his department, adding that the government is facing pressure and is determined to bring the culprits to justice.

Addressing the All Pakistan Women Workers Conference at Karachi Arts Council, Ghani said that the government has officially recognized domestic workers. He also shared a personal note, saying that he himself had been fired from an organization once.

Highlighting the role of women in society, she recalled that her grandmother ran a small shop and helped her father and family in education. He said that women today are working in better conditions than in the past and expressed happiness over their increasing participation in the workforce.

The minister acknowledged that the society is still not as developed or civilized as some other countries, but said efforts are underway to improve the situation. He further said that his political leadership has no ambivalence regarding the rights of workers.

Ghani revealed that in 2016, when he was working as a consultant, he was offered a bribe of Rs 50 million per month. He reiterated that more than 20 billion rupees of corruption had taken place in his department and emphasized that pressure tactics will not be accepted.

He said that we will ensure punishment for those involved in corruption. I cannot restore corrupt persons to their positions.

He also remarked that he could resign from ministerial posts several times and would not compromise his principles to retain the post.

On housing initiatives, Ghani said the government is building two million houses, adding that ownership will be given to women instead of men. He said that bank accounts of lakhs of women have been created with this initiative.

He further noted the problems in registering home-based workers for Social Security cards, adding that currently around 500,000 to 600,000 workers are registered, while the target is 5 million registrations.
