Decision to deploy Army and Rangers in Punjab ahead of PTI protests

ISLAMABAD – Ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) long march on September 27, security preparations were stepped up, with the Punjab government calling for the deployment of Army and Rangers personnel in key districts.

Sources said on Wednesday that the Punjab Home Department has approached the federal government to deploy Rangers in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Mianwali. Officials have also requested the army to be deployed in Rawalpindi, with the proposed deployment of both forces being sought by October 5.

The move comes at a time when the provincial government is stepping up preparations to maintain law and order during the PTI’s planned march. The security situation and the proposed arrangements were also discussed in the Standing Committee on Law and Justice of the Punjab Cabinet.

Meanwhile, the Islamabad Police has called for a major boost to its manpower, with 18,000 additional personnel from Punjab and Sindh for security duty ahead of March. 16,000 personnel of Punjab Police and 2,000 personnel of Sindh Police are included in the request.

The Capital Police has also sought senior command level reinforcement by requesting three Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs), seven Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) and 18 Superintendents of Police (SPs) from the two provinces.

As September 27 approaches, authorities in Punjab and Islamabad are ramping up security preparations and calling for additional personnel to deal with the expected law and order challenges associated with the PTI march.
