DGISI Asim Malik was reportedly given a one-year extension as Spy Master, NSA.
ISLAMABAD – Journalist Hasan Ayub Khan quoted senior security sources as saying that Lt. Gen. Muhammad Asim Malik will continue to serve as Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and National Security Advisor (NSA).
In its recent blog, the Journal claimed that Malik will remain in charge of the intelligence agency for another year and will retain his role as national security adviser. The development comes at a time when Pakistan is facing major security challenges, including militant violence and rising regional tensions.

Asim Malik took charge of DG ISI on 30 September 2024, replacing Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum. Prior to his appointment as Intelligence Chief, he was serving as Adjutant General at General Headquarters.
In April 2025, Malik was given the additional charge of National Security Advisor, becoming the first ISI chief to simultaneously hold the post of NSA. A Cabinet Division notification confirmed that he will continue as DGISI while holding additional charge.
The expansion of the report means Pakistan’s intelligence and national security are expected to remain at the center of decision-making, rather than changing the country, amid speculation about possible changes in the country’s top military appointments.
The development also put to rest speculation about the country’s possible successors as DGISI, at least for the reporting period. He said that reports of Major General Wajid Aziz or Major General Faisal Naseer going to the post of Intelligence Chief are false.
Faisal Naseer has been posted to the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NECTA) while Wajid Aziz has also got a new posting. He argues that neither posting should automatically be construed as preparation for the post of DGISI.

Malik joined the Pakistan Army through the 80th Pakistan Military Academy Long Course and received the Sword of Honor. He belongs to the Baloch Regiment and has held several high operational and teaching positions.

Before becoming DGISI, he commanded an infantry brigade in Waziristan and an infantry division in Balochistan. He also served as an instructor at the Command and Staff College, Quetta, and as a chief instructor at the National Defense University. He is a graduate of Fort Leavenworth in the United States and the Royal College of Defense Studies in the United Kingdom.
His appointment as NSA gave him an unusually broad role spanning intelligence assessment and national security policy. The NSA serves as the prime minister’s principal adviser on national security, foreign policy and strategic affairs, Dawn reported at the time.
