LAHORE – Drivers in Lahore better watch it as traffic police turn up the heat, traffic wardens have been given new fine targets and a deadline of just 15 days, while unpaid e-challans also face tougher recovery measures.

Lahore’s motorcyclists may soon find themselves under much closer scrutiny as traffic authorities have dramatically stepped up enforcement against rule breakers and unpaid fines.

Reports said that Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Abdul Rahim Shirazi ordered the traffic authorities to increase the number of challans issued in the metropolis after it was pointed out that enforcement had decreased compared to last year.

The crackdown is particularly focused on violations involving unlicensed drivers, underage motorcyclists, vehicles without fitness certificates and vehicles emitting smoke, where the number of challans has reportedly gone down.

The traffic wardens have been given a deadline of 15 days to meet their set targets. Those who fail to obtain the required data may face departmental action.

But strict behavior does not stop issuing new tickets. Lahore traffic authorities are also trying to squeeze motorists who have left their e-challans unpaid. CTO Shirazi has written to DIG Traffic Punjab and Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), suggesting that access to certain government services be linked to clearance of e-challan arrears.

If implemented, the proposal could make it harder to ignore unpaid traffic fines, putting extra pressure on motorists to settle their pending fines.
