Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Baqaraid, will now be celebrated in most parts of India on Thursday, May 28, after religious bodies confirmed that the Zul-Hijjah moon was not sighted earlier this week.

The update forced several institutions, courts and state governments to revise their holiday schedules, shifting the public holiday from May 27 to May 28.

However, Jammu and Kashmir will celebrate the festival on May 27 based on local moon sighting traditions.

It was announced by religious organizations that the holiday was revised after the crescent moon for the beginning of Dhul-Hijjah was not sighted. After that, several institutes updated their schedule.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) announced that central government offices in Delhi and New Delhi will remain closed on May 28 instead of May 27.

The Supreme Court also revised its vacation calendar. The court said it would normally function on May 27, while cases previously scheduled for May 28 would now run a day earlier.

Which states will celebrate Eid on May 28?

States including Andhra Pradesh and Telangana changed the Eid holiday to May 28 after the new festival date was confirmed following moon sighting announcements.

The Telangana-based president of the Deccan Ulama Majlis announced that Eid-ul-Azha will be held on May 28 after the completion of 30 days of Zul-Qaida.

In Andhra Pradesh, the government also postponed the Intermediate Public Advanced Supplementary Examinations which were earlier scheduled to be held on May 28.

A two-day holiday in Kerala on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

In a notification, the General Administration Department said May 27 had already been declared a holiday for the ‘Festival of Sacrifice’ Eid.

“Since ‘Eid-ul-Adha’ (Baqrid) is being observed in the state on May 28, the government is pleased to order that Thursday, May 28, 2026 will also be a holiday…”, the notification said.

West Bengal has declared public holiday on May 28, 2026 (Thursday) on the occasion of Eid Al-Zhaa (Baqrid). The government has also canceled the previously announced holidays on May 26 and May 27.

The Board of Intermediate Education has scheduled the affected exams for June 5 and June 12.

Yes, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) had already listed May 28 as a market holiday for Eid-ul-Azha.
