Fazlur Rehman claims that his sons and nephews were attacked for not paying extortion

Lahore – Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that while there is a relatively stable law and order situation in Punjab, the situation is worse in two other provinces, claiming that there is “virtually no government” in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Speaking to senior journalists in Lahore about the country’s political situation, Fazlur Rahman said that his family was also targeted because they refused to pay alimony.

“We are also asked for extortion money. My sons and nephews have been attacked because we don’t pay,” he said.

The JUI-F chief said that he called two in-camera sessions of Parliament to discuss the situation, but his demand was not heeded.

He said that at present neither domestic nor foreign investors are investing in Pakistan while trade with Central Asian countries has also been affected. He further said that Pakistan used to export fruits and vegetables to Central Asia but now this trade has stopped.

Fazlur Rehman alleged that the parliament was formed through election rigging and said that implementing the National Finance Commission (NFC) award was proving difficult for the authorities.

He said that matters related to the country’s mineral resources should be discussed at the public level in which clear shares should be defined for the federal government, the provinces and the people.

According to Fazlur Rehman, many problems can be solved by a clear division of powers between the federal, provincial and local governments.

He also said that his party had played a role in the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, claiming that it had persuaded the government to withdraw 35 clauses.

He termed this development as the result of cooperation and consultation between JUI-F and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), adding that the two parties have formed an alliance in Parliament to pursue a common strategy.

Fazlur Rehman also admitted the mistake regarding Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

He said that whatever my thoughts are the same as Nawaz Sharif’s thoughts, the difference is that I am speaking while he is silent.
