Flooding intensified in Ravi River, hundreds of people were trapped in Ferozwala.
Ferozewala – Floods have intensified in Ferozewala tehsil and several villages along the Ravi river, leaving hundreds of families stranded due to the breach of a protective embankment along the seasonal river.
According to local reports, the crack severed the only road link between Pathan Colony and Lahore-GT Road, cutting access to the area. Several houses have been flooded, forcing the residents to move to safer places.
According to reports, at least three children have died in flood-related incidents in the affected areas.
Rachna Town, Rana Town, Pathan Colony, Kot Abdul Malik, suburbs of Kala Shah Kaku, Muradpur and Jamke Cheema have several feet of flood water, disrupting daily life and damaging homes.
Residents said floodwaters entered their settlements and seasonal drains overflowed, inundating several villages after the protective embankment was constructed. Many families have moved women, children and elderly relatives to safer places, while some men have stayed behind to protect their belongings from theft.
Mohammad Riaz, a resident of Pathan Colony, said that the area has been deprived of electricity for the past four days and the water level is continuously increasing. He said his family had moved to relatives’ homes, but stayed behind to protect the household goods.
Rashidan Bibi, another resident, said most of his household goods were destroyed by the floodwaters, adding that his life savings had been wiped out and he had yet to receive any government assistance.
Another resident, Abdul Rahman, said floodwaters suddenly entered homes overnight, forcing families to hastily evacuate while leaving behind much of their household property.
Mohammad Salim, a resident of Rachna Town, said that the water level showed no signs of receding after several days, bringing normal life to a standstill and causing a shortage of food and clean drinking water.
Relief operations are underway, with teams from Rescue 1122, Al Khidmat Foundation, and the welfare wing of Pakistan Central Muslim League helping the affected communities. Volunteers are using boats to evacuate women, children, senior citizens and other stranded people while distributing cooked food, dry food ration, clean drinking water and other essential items.
Pakistan Central Muslim League has also established emergency relief and medical camps, which provide free medicines, first aid, food and clean water. About 2,000 people have been evacuated to safer places so far, the organization said.
Residents criticized the authorities for failing to issue timely warnings despite claims that drones were monitoring the flood situation. He said that early cleaning of seasonal drains and removal of encroachments could have significantly reduced the damage.
Locals also complained that no high-ranking government or administrative officials visited the affected communities, with most of the relief efforts being carried out by rescue services and charitable organizations.
Meanwhile, fears are mounting after the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicted another spell of monsoon rains. Residents fear that additional rain could worsen flooding in already flooded areas.
