Gomal University is facing a major scandal of fake degrees and corruption.

PESHAWAR – A major scandal involving the issuance of fake degrees and financial irregularities has emerged at Gomal University, where 514 dubious degrees have been identified and action initiated against several top officials.

According to reports, the alleged irregularities between 2019 and 2023 were uncovered during a review of the current university administration.

Preliminary investigations have called hundreds of degrees suspect, with recommendations for their cancellation. Following the decision of the University Syndicate, the former Director of Education has been suspended while action has also been initiated against the former Controller of Examinations in connection with the fake degree case. Officials say that further action is expected against more people.

A new inquiry committee has been set up to investigate allegations of financial embezzlement and administrative misconduct within the university, while accountability measures have been stepped up.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Higher Education Meena Khan Afridi said that those involved in the Gomal University scandal will not be spared and strict accountability will be ensured against those who play with the future of students.

He further said that cleaning the higher education system from corruption and fake degree mafia is among the top priorities of the government.

The provincial minister further said that on the instructions of the Chief Minister, the monitoring system is being strengthened in all the higher educational institutions of the province and accountability will continue without discrimination to ensure transparency and merit in the educational institutions.
