WASHINGTON – The AI chatbot by Elon Musk’s XAI, Grok, was designed to analyze data, generate insights, and help users make complex decisions, but the AI tech owned by the world’s richest man went far beyond consumer use.

Pentagon AI official Cameron Stanley said Grok is now being used within Project Maven, the military’s long-standing AI-assisted targeting initiative. The program was previously powered by Anthropic’s Claude model before the government shifted to other AI providers.
Maven Smart Systems helped U.S. forces deploy more than 2,000 munitions against 2,000 separate targets during a 96-hour military campaign, Stanley said. He described Grok’s government-centric model as a tool that significantly improved operational efficiency.
The revelation shows how quickly AI is moving from commercial products to national security applications. Military officials again argued that AI can process intelligence faster, identify patterns more efficiently, and help commanders make decisions in real time. However, critics warn that the tech is outpacing public oversight and raises difficult questions about accountability when machines are involved in life-and-death decisions.
The court filing also highlights a broader shift within the Pentagon’s AI strategy.
The government terminated its contracts with AI startup Anthropic earlier this year after the company refused to allow its technology to be used for fully autonomous attacks or mass surveillance of Americans. The Pentagon later expanded its work with other leading AI firms, including Google, OpenAI, and Musk’s XAI.
The growing role of AI in military operations has also sparked resistance within the technology industry. Hundreds of Google employees have previously opposed the company’s involvement in classified military projects, while researchers and ethicists continue to debate the dangers of using sophisticated AI systems in warfare.
