Inflation hits Pakistanis, prices of ghee and cooking oil close to Rs 600 per kg

LAHORE – A double whammy for inflation-weary Pakistanis as the public is forced to pay higher prices for ghee and cooking oil following a steep hike in petroleum prices.

The fresh fuel hikes fueled fears of another wave of inflation, as higher transport and freight costs threaten to push up prices of food and other essentials.

Grade III ghee is selling at around Rs 500 per kg, below this level it is becoming difficult to find available supplies. Meanwhile, Grade II ghee has reached Rs 545 to Rs 550 per kg while Grade I ghee is selling between Rs 595 to Rs 600 per kg.

Cooking oil prices have also moved upwards, adding further pressure to household food budgets. The latest spike in fuel is raising concerns that the impact could extend beyond petrol pumps.

Higher fuel costs increase costs associated with transportation and freight, especially for vehicles carrying food and other commodities from production and wholesale centers to retail markets. Prices of ghee, cooking oil, vegetables, meat and other staples may face additional pressure if transportation costs continue to rise.

The development comes after prices of chicken, mutton, beef and eggs rose, fueling fears that consumers may face a widespread hike in prices of daily necessities. For middle- and low-income families, the latest price hike poses another challenge as household spending continues to rise.

Consumers urged the government to strengthen market surveillance and ensure that traders do not use high petroleum prices as a justification for profiteering.

Meanwhile, petrol price also increased by Rs 3.81 to Rs 341.59 per litre, while High Speed Diesel (HSD) rose by Rs 3.59 to Rs 368.29 per litre. The revised prices came into effect from August 22 and will be in force till August 24.
