TEHRAN – Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi will leave for Iran today on a high-level diplomatic visit amid tensions between Islamabad and Tehran amid tensions in the Gulf.
Naqvi is carrying a special message from Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir to the Supreme Leader of Iran, while Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has also entrusted him with a separate message for the Iranian leadership.
The senior Pakistani diplomat’s back-and-forth marks an unusually active phase of high-level exchanges between the two countries. Earlier he also went to Iran along with Field Marshal Asim Munir.
The upcoming visit comes after he recently returned from Kyrgyzstan and will travel to Tehran after meetings with the Prime Minister and senior officials in Islamabad.
His latest engagement follows a series of talks with Iranian Interior Minister Iskandar Momani during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Interior Ministers’ Meeting, where the two sides held several rounds of discussions on bilateral cooperation and regional coordination.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Ismail Baghi has said that Pakistan and Iran are in the final stages of drafting a memorandum of understanding aimed at reducing tensions and strengthening dispute resolution mechanisms. This development indicates the continuation of diplomatic efforts to stabilize bilateral relations.
The visit also comes against a backdrop of heightened regional sensitivities, with reported military and missile developments in the Gulf raising concerns about broader regional stability and the ongoing US-Iran rapprochement.
Pakistan has been playing an active role in facilitating dialogue between regional stakeholders, including Washington and Tehran, as diplomatic efforts continue to defuse tensions and prevent further escalation.
