Iran formally suspends Islamabad MoU, increases attacks in Gulf
TEHRAN – Iran formally announced the suspension of its commitments under Islamabad’s Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking what could be a formal end to a diplomatic effort brokered by Pakistan that had tried to steer Tehran and Washington toward a lasting peace deal.
The announcement came from Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, who said Tehran had stopped implementing obligations under the deal as the country’s priority shifted to national defense amid an escalating military conflict with the United States. “We have suspended the implementation of our promises. We are not implementing them and are focusing on the defense of the country,” Gharibabadi said in an interview with Iran’s state news agency.
Gharibabadi was also a member of Iran’s negotiating team that held talks with US officials under a diplomatic framework supported by Pakistan.
The Islamabad MoU, brokered by Pakistan over several months, was intended to lay the foundation for a comprehensive peace process between Iran and the United States. According to Iranian officials, the agreement consisted of 14 points and envisaged a new round of negotiations after six months. That roadmap now appears open.
Iranian officials said the conflict had resumed amid attacks on commercial shipping, renewed tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s reimposition of a naval blockade. Tehran has accused Washington of violating the spirit and terms of the memorandum to gain strategic control over parts of the vital waterway.
According to the ministry’s spokesman Hussain Kermanpour, 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in US strikes since July 6. Officials say five women and two children under the age of 18 are among the dead. Officials also said that 32 women and 18 minors were among the injured, while 37 victims were hospitalized.
Pakistan had spent months mediating talks that eventually produced a 14-point memorandum of understanding, in which both sides agreed to resume talks after six months, but Tehran accused Washington of adopting an interpretation of the accord that contradicted its original provisions in an attempt to achieve goals on the battlefield that it had failed to achieve.
“Iran cannot accept such an interpretation as it is a clear violation of the memorandum,” he said, calling for international condemnation of the US move as aggressive and irresponsible.
