Iran Prepares Conditions to Reopen Strait of Hormuz, Reveals Consent Amid Mediation Efforts
TEHRAN – Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohsin Rezaei, said a list of conditions is being drawn up for reopening the Strait of Hormuz that mediators have asked Tehran to drop.
In a televised interview, Rezai revealed that Iran and Oman had reached an agreement on a shipping corridor through the strait.
Earlier, Rezai met Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
Rezaei said Iran does not trust Washington, accusing the United States of repeatedly undermining diplomacy and negotiations in the past.
He warned that any US action against Iran would result in damage to US military and economic interests that would be remembered in history.
Speaking on the Strait of Hormuz, Rezaei said Iran wants Washington to take practical steps to meet Tehran’s demands before reopening the strategic waterway. He said that the US must meet Iran’s conditions before taking steps to reopen the Tehran Strait.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed also discussed with the Foreign Minister of Iran during his visit to Tehran. The talks focused on efforts to create a conducive environment for negotiations in the region and ongoing discussions on a proposed transitional framework.
The two sides also discussed a joint project to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz in an agreement, Arab media said.
The Prime Minister of Qatar stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and freedom of navigation of neighboring countries and called for continuing diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions.
Iran’s foreign minister thanked Qatar for its diplomatic efforts in support of the talks.
