TEHRAN – Another tense day in the Gulf as explosions rocked Iran’s strategic Qeshm island, amid tensions with Washington, raising fresh concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz and global energy supplies.
On Tuesday evening, there were fresh explosions on the strategically important island of Qeshm. His target was the Mason area, which has come under repeated attacks in recent days, and was once again targeted by military hostilities in the Gulf. The latest attacks have raised concerns over the security of one of the world’s most important naval outposts, with regional powers on high alert and global markets reacting to heightened uncertainty.
Kuwait confirmed that its air defense system had been activated after enemy air threats were detected, signaling that the conflict is no longer confined to a single front but is increasingly affecting multiple Gulf states.
The development came after a five-hour US military operation to target Iranian bases. Reports indicated that US forces carried out the strikes for the third consecutive night as Tehran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, dramatically escalating tensions around the strategic waterway that carries about a fifth of the world’s daily oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.
Iran responded by firing ballistic missiles at a US military base in Jordan, while also targeting Bahrain, home to a major US naval installation. Bahraini officials said their air defense system intercepted the incoming attack, while Jordan confirmed that four ballistic missiles were successfully destroyed before they reached their target. Residents of Bahrain’s capital, Manama, reported hearing multiple explosions during the intervention.
In Washington, US President Donald Trump announced plans to restore sanctions on Iranian shipping and proposed imposing a 20 percent security fee on cargo ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The measures were due to take effect at 2000 GMT on Tuesday, according to the US Navy-led Joint Maritime Information Center.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi strongly rejected the proposal, insisting that Iran has long protected the Strait of Hormuz and will continue to do so. Responding on social media, he called the proposed transit charge excessive, saying Tehran would continue to do a fair job in managing the vital waterway.
