Is Ishaq Dar returning as Pakistan’s new Finance Minister?

ISLAMABAD – With speculation rife in the political corridors of Islamabad that there could be a major cabinet reshuffle in the coming days, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar’s name is once again mooted for the coveted role of Finance Czar.

A tweet shared by journalist Aizaz Syed said that interior minister Mohsin Naqvi is being considered for nomination to the foreign ministry while deputy prime minister Ishaq Dar may be brought back to the finance ministry.

As the post caused an uproar online, there was no official confirmation or denial from the government, with users calling it speculation.

For Pakistan, Ishaq Dar’s return means a big change, especially as the government is taking new austerity measures to revive the $452 economy. In four separate terms as finance minister, Dar Zholz’s finance portfolio, as he claimed to control inflation through intervention and use international financing to stabilize the economy.

Members of the ruling party credit him with negotiating IMF support, increasing foreign exchange reserves and protecting Pakistan from recurring economic storms. When financial pressures mounted, Darr was often trusted to take charge, he says.

However, critics say his economic model relied heavily on borrowing, maintained an artificially strong rupee, and failed to address deeper structural problems such as tax reform, fiscal discipline, and export competitiveness. For them, Daronomics provided temporary relief while preempting difficult decisions in the future.

The speculation comes at a crucial moment. Pakistan’s economy is tied to IMF-backed fiscal targets, with the government’s focus on revenue generation, debt management and economic stability in the context of a challenging budget cycle.
