Lahore’s proposed electric tram corridor includes CBD, Jail Road, Mall Road.

LAHORE – The Punjab government has unveiled the proposed route for Lahore’s much-anticipated electric tram project, with officials confirming that the scheme has entered the procurement phase after meeting contract requirements.

Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar announced that the electric tram is expected to start operating during the next fiscal year, bringing a modern and eco-friendly public transport system to the heart of the provincial capital.

The tram will start from Lahore’s Central Business District (CBD), pass through the city’s busiest arteries, including Jail Road and Mall Road, and end at Istanbul Chowk. The route is expected to serve thousands of passengers daily, improving connectivity to important commercial and administrative areas.

An earlier proposal to develop a full metro-style network has been shelved in favor of a more practical and cost-effective electric tram model. The revised approach is designed to increase urban mobility without the need for large-scale infrastructure development, making the project faster and more feasible.

Bilal Akbar said that no tree will be cut during the completion of the tram project. He also said that the government is committed to sustainable development and aims to modernize the city’s transport network without compromising its green spaces.

Officials believe that the electric tram will provide a cleaner, more efficient and reliable travel option to the residents of Lahore. The project is also expected to help reduce traffic congestion on major roads and reduce vehicle emissions, supporting broader environmental goals.

The electric tram initiative is part of the Punjab government’s broader strategy to modernize urban transport infrastructure and introduce sustainable mobility solutions across the province. Now with procurement underway and operations targeted for the next financial year, Lahore seems set to enter a new era of public transport.
