Messi rejects claims of World Cup bias, says Argentina won through hard work

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has rejected allegations that FIFA favored his team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting Argentina’s success is the result of hard work and consistency — not preferential treatment.

Speaking to the media after Argentina’s 2-1 victory over England in the World Cup semi-finals, Messi was asked about claims that FIFA had shown bias in favor of Argentina.

“We’ve been among the best teams in the world for the last four years, whether people like it or not,” said the Argentine star, responding strongly.

Messi added that Argentina’s achievements were achieved through dedication and consistent excellence.

“What we have achieved is not a mere coincidence,” he said. It is the result of constant hard work and high performance. Nobody gave us anything – we earned everything ourselves.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner named Argentina’s semi-final win over England after football legend Diego Maradona, saying he would have been proud of the team’s success.

“Diego would have been very happy today. It’s a special day for him too, and this victory is our tribute to him,” Messi said.

He also recalled Maradona’s spectacular performance against England in the 1986 World Cup, saying Argentina’s latest victory had the same spirit and determination that inspired the historic victory four decades earlier.
