Naqvi engages with Momani before handing over the field marshal’s letter to the Iranian Supreme Leader
ISLAMABAD/TEHRAN – Pakistan stepped up its diplomatic engagement in Tehran to advance efforts to de-escalate tensions between Iran and the US, with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi holding a series of high-level meetings during his visit.
Naqvi’s engagement follows an earlier meeting with Iranian Interior Minister Iskandar Momani in Bishkek, where the two sides discussed Pakistan-Iran relations and the broader regional situation, the interior ministry said.
Iranian Interior Minister Iskandar Momani welcomed them. The two later briefed journalists. Discussions continued in Tehran on regional stability and ongoing diplomatic coordination. As part of the visit, Naqvi is also expected to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and other top officials.
In his media interaction, the security czar said he traveled to the neighboring country to deliver a letter from Field Marshal Munir and a message from Prime Minister Shahbaz Shahbaz to Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei.
Pakistan is playing a key facilitating role amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran. During the meetings, Naqvi addressed Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir to Iran’s Supreme Leader and hoped for a peaceful and negotiated path.
He asserted that Pakistan views the emerging situation with concern, noting that instability in one part of the region has wider consequences. He also expressed hope that continued diplomatic engagement could help reduce tensions and move towards a durable settlement.
Before his trip to Tehran, Naqvi met Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in Lahore, where regional diplomatic developments as well as national security and public safety measures were discussed. The prime minister is said to have issued guidance on Pakistan’s broader diplomatic approach.
The backdrop to these efforts is a conflict in West Asia that has previously disrupted global energy markets and trade flows, triggered by military tensions in February and later halted by a cease-fire in April. Since then, Pakistan has reportedly been involved in indirect communication channels between the two sides, including facilitating pre-emptive dialogue in the region.
Pakistan’s latest overtures are seen as part of a cautious and sustained effort to keep diplomatic channels open and support stability in a region where tensions are critical.
