NCCIA summons journalists over allegations of harassment at Chakwal College
RAWALPINDI – The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has summoned three journalists following a complaint filed by the principal of a government women’s college in Chakwal over reports published about alleged harassment in the institution.
NCCIA Rawalpindi has issued notices to Samudran Khan, Qazi Waseem Jahangir and Nabil Anwar Dhakko to appear before the agency and reply to the complaint filed by Prof Mehnaz Akhtar, principal of Government Graduate College for Women, Chakwal.
The journalists have said they will appear before the agency and submit detailed responses, supported by documents and official records they say are the basis of their reporting.
Professor Mehnaz Akhtar alleged that the reports published by the journalists contained fabricated, baseless and false allegations against him. He reportedly maintained that the coverage damaged his personal reputation as well as that of the government body he headed.
The complaint also allegedly contains a specific allegation against a journalist, accusing him of sending a threatening message to the principal via WhatsApp, but the latter denied the allegation saying he never threatened the principal. He maintained that he only contacted her via WhatsApp to seek her version of the matter before publication, calling the communication part of normal journalistic practice.
Journalists also challenged claims that their reports were based on unsupported claims. He said that his coverage of the college was prepared after examining official documents and records related to the matter.
At the center of the reporting were allegations of alleged harassment of female faculty members by a junior clerk posted at the college.
The reports are based on an inquiry report prepared by the Director Colleges Rawalpindi Division, a resolution of condemnation signed by 32 women professors against the clerk, contact with the National Human Rights Commission (NCHR) and government orders regarding the clerk’s transfer, the journalists said.
He further said that efforts were made to get the versions of all relevant parties before the reports were published.
