Owais Leghari says that the subsidy will continue for consumers who use up to 200 units.

ISLAMABAD – Federal Minister for Power Owais Leghari has assured consumers that electricity subsidy will continue for households consuming up to 200 units per month.

Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Leghari said that consumers using less than 200 units are currently benefiting from subsidized electricity rates, the subsidy amount being reflected in their monthly bills.

He said that the number of customers falling under the 200 unit category has now crossed 20 million. The minister encouraged subsidy recipients to scan the QR code printed on their electricity bills, adding that the government aimed to connect all consumers with the QR code system.

Leghari dismissed reports that the subsidy for protected consumers would be withdrawn, terming such claims as untrue. He said that the government is committed to help deserving consumers through targeted relief measures.

The minister also highlighted the progress in the power sector, stating that electricity prices have come down in the last two years. He said that the government has reduced the revolving debt by Rs 780 billion and is relying more and more on domestic sources for power generation.

According to Leghari, around two million electricity meters have already been linked to consumers’ national identity cards to improve transparency and efficiency.

He added that the energy sector reforms are yielding positive results, reducing electricity bills by 16 percent for domestic consumers and 32 percent for protected consumers. In total, the government is providing Rs 527 billion subsidy to agricultural and residential consumers.

The federal minister further said that electricity rates have been reduced by 45% for consumers in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He also claimed that the renegotiation of contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) has resulted in savings of Rs 3.5 trillion.

Leghari clarified that there is currently no proposal under consideration to impose new taxes on electricity bills.
