Pakistan will host US-Iran talks on nuclear program, sanctions next week.

ISLAMABAD – The next round of US-Iran talks could take place in Pakistan on July 11, potentially putting Islamabad at the center of the world’s most closely watched geopolitical talks.

A report shared by Al Arabiya said the expected talks would focus on some of the most contentious issues dividing Washington and Tehran, including US sanctions on Iran, the Iranian asset freeze and Tehran’s nuclear program. The report further claimed that Iran will finalize its negotiating delegation after the funeral of the former Supreme Leader of Iran.

Another leading publication reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezhashkian was instrumental in persuading Mujtaba Khamenei to support renewed talks with Washington.

The newspaper claimed that President Pizshakyan has warned that the prolonged naval blockade is crippling Iran’s economy, citing a reported warning from the governor of Iran’s central bank that the country could face severe shortages of food and medicine by the end of August if the pressure continues.

Pyzhashkian also told the Iranian leadership that he would resign if the deal with the US was rejected. The New York Times further claims that Mujtaba Khamenei indicated that he would accept the deal if it had the support of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, which reportedly overwhelmingly approved the proposal.

This development took place at a time when the last rites of the former supreme leader of Iran are going on, in which the Pakistani delegation led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif participated. After the visit, the Prime Minister left for Turkey directly, while the Field Marshal of Pakistan returned home.

Neither Pakistan, the US nor Iran have officially confirmed that the July 11 talks will take place in Pakistan. If confirmed, the meeting could mark a major diplomatic breakthrough and position Pakistan as an unlikely venue for potentially historic talks between Washington and Tehran.
