Pakistanis will soon get legal tinted car windows by paying an annual fee.
ISLAMABAD – For years, tinted car windows were used by VIPs and high-profile people, but now ordinary Pakistanis can also legally be allowed to install tinted glass on their cars, but they have to pay for it.
The federal government is preparing to make changes to Pakistan’s tinted glass permit policy in 2025, proposing free tinted glass permits for current and former members of parliament while requiring ordinary citizens to pay an annual fee of Rs 15,000.
According to the revised draft prepared by the Ministry of Interior, the proposed amendments have been made following the recommendations of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior. The policy brings in a new authorization framework that differentiates between lawmakers, the general public and foreign nationals.
Under the draft, members of the National Assembly and Senate, both serving and former, would be exempted from annual permit fees, allowing them to obtain colored glass permits at no cost. In contrast, people seeking permission to install tinted windows on their vehicles will have to pay Rs 15,000 per year.
The proposed policy also tightens eligibility for foreign nationals. While previous drafts allowed foreigners residing in Pakistan to apply for stained glass permits, the revised version removes this condition entirely. The Ministry of Home Affairs has replaced the word “foreigners” with “diplomats”, which means that only accredited diplomatic personnel will be eligible for this facility.
Officials said the revised Tinted Glass Permit Policy 2025 has been circulated for consultation among all concerned stakeholders. Their feedback and recommendations will be evaluated before the government gives final approval to the policy and formally notifies its implementation.
Once implemented, the revised policy will establish new rules for issuance of tinted glass permits, eligibility criteria, and application procedures across the country. However, the proposal is already expected to draw attention to the provision of free permits to current and former parliamentarians while introducing an annual fee for ordinary citizens.
