On May 28, 1998, Pakistan conducted historic nuclear tests in the Chagai Hills that officially made the country a nuclear power and, as the leaders described it, restored the strategic balance in South Asia.

In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the day as the most important moment in Pakistan’s history, saying it reflected “determination, unity and courage” in the face of external pressure. He said that the decision to conduct nuclear tests was taken in response to India’s earlier nuclear blasts and was aimed at protecting Pakistan’s sovereignty and defense capability.

The Prime Minister said that Pakistan went ahead with the test despite intense international pressure, sanctions and stalled diplomatic efforts. He said that this step gave a clear signal that the country will not compromise on its security. Success, he added, is acting as a strong deterrent, ensuring peace through balance rather than threat.

Sharif paid tribute to those who contributed to the program, naming former prime ministers Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif as well as scientists Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan and Dr. Samar Mubarak Mand, engineers, technicians, and armed forces personnel who played a role in the nuclear development process.

He said that Pakistan’s nuclear capability is the cornerstone of national defense and a symbol of unity and sacrifice. Referring to recent regional tensions, he said Pakistan had shown strong resolve against hostile actions during “Mark Haq”, and alleged that India had staged a false flag incident in occupied Kashmir’s Pahalgam to justify targeting civilians. He said Pakistan’s response, which he called “Banyan Marso”, reflected national cohesion and military preparedness.

The Prime Minister praised the country’s military leadership including Chief of Defense Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir, Air Chief Zaheer Ahmad Babar and Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf for maintaining operational readiness and professionalism.

He also warned that Pakistan is alert to the threat posed by proxy groups, namely Fitna-ul-Khawarij and Fitna-ul-Hindustan, and said that ongoing operations against terrorism will continue until such networks are dismantled. He reiterated that Pakistan wants peace but has full right to defend itself against any aggression.

President Asif Ali Zardari also in a separate message termed Takbeer Day as an important milestone in Pakistan’s history, saying it marked the day when the country emerged as a declared nuclear power and achieved credible deterrence.

He said the 1998 tests were carried out in response to India’s nuclear development and despite economic sanctions and international pressure. He credited the political leadership, scientists, engineers and armed forces for what he termed a “collective national achievement” that strengthened Pakistan’s security.

The Armed Forces of Pakistan said that Takbeer Day is a day of national unity, resilience and unwavering commitment to protect sovereignty and territorial integrity. He called the 1998 nuclear tests an important milestone achieved through visionary leadership, scientific excellence and the sacrifices of both military personnel and civilians.

ISPR said Pakistan’s strategic capability is a “reliable deterrent” to ensure peace and stability in the region.

The military leadership reiterated that the armed forces are fully prepared to defend the country against all threats and will maintain national security, stability and development with determination and unity.

The government has declared a public holiday on May 28 on Yom Takbeer.
