Power Minister Leghari admitted that fixed charges in electricity bills have doubled.

ISLAMABAD – Federal Minister for Energy Owais Ahmad Khan Laghari has admitted that there has been a significant increase in fixed charges in electricity bills, from around 3-4% of the total bill to around 10%.

Speaking in a television programme, the minister said that the fixed costs remain constant throughout the year, but their impact varies depending on the monthly electricity consumption.

He explained that during peak usage months, the fixed cost component appears to be low, while it becomes more prominent during periods of low usage.

Consumers using up to 200 units under the protected category have seen lower energy prices, while subsidies have reduced overall household electricity rates for some consumers, Laghari said.

He added that the power consumption has increased by around 7-9% in the last several months and said that the detailed data is available on the Nepra website for verification.

The Minister said that despite the changes in the billing structure, efforts to provide relief to domestic consumers through subsidy and tariff adjustment are ongoing.
