Prime Minister Shehbaz formed a high-level JIT to investigate the One Constitution Avenue issue.
ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on the recommendation of the Cabinet Division constituted a high-level joint investigation team (JIT) to probe the One Constitution Avenue case.
According to the notification, the JIT has been given 60 days to submit its report. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has been directed to issue notifications and provide secretarial support to the committee.
The team will consist of senior officers of grade 21 and above. A Grade 21 officer of NAB has been appointed as the head of the committee, which will also include representatives from Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Intelligence Bureau (IB).
The JIT will review the legal and administrative issues related to One Constitution Avenue. All Federal Ministries, Divisions and Departments have been directed to assist the Committee as and when required.
The JIT was recommended by a committee headed by the Law Minister.
The development came after the Islamabad High Court recently dismissed a petition challenging the cancellation of lease by BNP Pvt Ltd in the One Constitution Avenue case. The court upheld the decision of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to cancel the lease as legal.
The court in its written order said that the company failed to fulfill the financial conditions set by the Supreme Court. The court noted that although the company had paid the 2021 installment, it failed to submit the required 2022 payment of Rs 2.916 billion despite reminders.
The court observed that the cancellation of the lease was done in accordance with the Supreme Court’s 2019 directions, which required the company to pay Rs 17.5 billion within 8 years. The court also rejected the company’s objections on procedural issues and dismissed its execution petition.
