Punjab imposed Section 144 across the province in view of security during Muharram

LAHORE – The Punjab Home Department has imposed Section 144 across the province to maintain law and order and ensure effective security arrangements during Muharram.

According to the official spokesperson, these restrictions will remain in place from 17 June to 26 June from 1 to 10 Muharram.

Meanwhile, restrictions of seven different categories will be implemented across the province.

According to the notification, only approved processions and religious gatherings will be allowed, while no new rituals or activities will be allowed. The use or display of weapons and incendiary material in public places without prior approval of the competent authority is also prohibited.

The decree further prohibits the use of inflammatory slogans, statements, gestures or remarks that may incite communal or religious tension. Advertising of material promoting communal or ethnic hatred is also strictly prohibited.

For security reasons, restrictions have also been imposed on the roofs of buildings located along the procession routes. No one will be allowed to collect stones, bricks, bottles, or other objects that pose a security threat. Similarly, spectators will not be allowed to stand on roofs or shop platforms on the procession routes.

The Interior Department has said that there will be a ban on double riding on 9 and 10 Muharram, however, this exemption will apply to senior citizens, women and law enforcement officials.

An official notification has been issued, and the authorities concerned have been directed to ensure wide public awareness of the restrictions.
