The US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Washington/Tehran – The United States and Iran have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at easing tensions between the two countries, reopening the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping and creating a step-by-step roadmap for negotiations on nuclear and regional security issues.
The deal, hailed by US officials as a major diplomatic achievement, was digitally signed by US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqir Ghalib. Officials say the full text of the agreement is expected to be released in the next 24 to 48 hours, while technical talks on its implementation are set to begin later this week.
An official signing ceremony is expected on Friday, with Switzerland emerging as a possible venue. Officials said procedural and technical matters are being finalized before the agreement enters the implementation phase.
A key component of the deal is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit routes for oil and liquefied natural gas exports. U.S. officials said restrictions affecting maritime traffic would be lifted, allowing shipping activity to gradually return to normal levels.
President Donald Trump said commercial oil tankers had already begun passing through the strategic waterway and signaled that traffic would continue to increase over time.
The deal also establishes a phased diplomatic process whereby Iran’s nuclear program will be addressed in future rounds of negotiations rather than at an early stage. Officials said the approach is meant to build trust and ease tensions before tackling more complex issues.
Regional security developments, particularly the situation in Lebanon, are linked to wider implementation of the agreement. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stressed that a lasting settlement would require an end to Israeli military operations in Lebanon, underscoring Tehran’s position that a reduction in regional tensions is essential for the deal to succeed.
The two sides are expected to continue discussions in the coming weeks to finalize implementation procedures and technical arrangements.
