The US-Iran technical talks, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, will begin in Switzerland, Foreign Office

ISLAMABAD – US and Iranian delegations are heading to the Swiss Alps, where technical-level talks under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) are scheduled to begin on June 21.

The talks, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, are being seen as an important test of whether recent diplomatic developments can translate into concrete results.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that representatives of Washington and Tehran will participate in the talks, while Pakistani and Qatari officials will facilitate the process. Islamabad says it is committed to advancing the understanding reached under the MoU and promoting peace and stability through dialogue.

The development comes amid heightened diplomatic activity involving several high-profile figures. Sources say that a senior Pakistani delegation is expected to arrive in Switzerland, in which Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif is also expected to attend. Their presence will mark a major diplomatic moment for Pakistan, which has emerged as a central player in efforts to bring the two long-time rivals closer to the negotiating table.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has gone to Iran to support the diplomatic initiative. During his visit, he met with the Iranian Foreign Minister and discussed important issues related to the negotiations. Naqvi, who is considered a key facilitator in the process, is expected to meet the Iranian president in Mashhad and encourage direct contact between Tehran and Washington.

The technical talks followed the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, opening the way for further engagement between the US and Iran. Although a previously scheduled high-level meeting in Switzerland was postponed, attention has now turned to upcoming talks between technical teams, where key details of a potential deal are expected to be hammered out.

Behind-the-scenes diplomatic activities are also intensifying. US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Wittkoff has reportedly left for Switzerland, while Jared Kushner is already in the country. Meanwhile, reports suggest that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi may also travel to Switzerland, although his plans have yet to be officially confirmed and could still change.

Adding further significance to the gathering, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani arrived in Switzerland on Friday, reinforcing Qatar’s role as a key mediator in the talks.

US Vice President JD Vance, who was expected to lead the US delegation, canceled his visit at the last minute on Thursday evening. It is not yet clear whether he will join the talks at a later stage. Although officials have not officially announced the exact schedule for the talks, expectations are high that the first round of initial talks on a possible reconciliation between the US and Iran will take place in Bergenstock in the coming days.
