Trump claims US occupation of Strait of Hormuz, announces 20 percent cargo fee

ISLAMABAD – US President Donald Trump has announced that the US will take responsibility for securing the Strait of Hormuz, declaring that Washington is “owning” the strategic waterway and will act as its “guardian”.

Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would remain open to international shipping “with or without Iran”, while he described it as a restoration of the “Iranian blockade”. Under the proposal, Iranian ships and customers would be barred from entering or leaving the strait, while ships from all other countries would have unrestricted access.

Trump also unveiled a controversial plan to impose a 20% fee on all cargo passing through the waterway, arguing that the fee would pay for the cost of providing security to the United States at one of the world’s most volatile maritime outposts.

The president further claimed that the US had already struck a deal with Iran but alleged that Tehran had failed to fulfill its promises. He said that the process of implementing the new policy will start immediately.

If enacted, the proposal would represent a dramatic shift in U.S. policy toward the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass.
