WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump appears to be treading a delicate and shifting path in his Iran policy, projecting confidence that a “very good deal” is within reach, while firmly maintaining the threat of military action.
In recent remarks and talks, Washington has signaled both an urgency for a diplomatic breakthrough and a readiness to escalate tensions if talks break down, creating an atmosphere where peace and pressure go hand in hand.
In his latest interview, POTUS portrayed the potential deal as a major diplomatic breakthrough but emphasized that Washington was pushing for tougher conditions in the final framework. The White House called for revisions to an earlier draft deal focused on de-escalating tensions in the Middle East, specifically emphasizing tighter controls on Iran’s nuclear material.
Officials familiar with the talks revealed that the updated proposal has already been sent back to Tehran for revision, although no clear timeline has been set for a final decision. Trump also launched a fresh attack on what he called the “fake news media,” accusing journalists of downplaying American achievements.
“You’ve won a big war, and they say you lost… it’s a terrible thing for our country,” he said, adding that the negative coverage could also serve Iran’s interests.
The talks are taking place against the backdrop of continued US and Israeli attacks on Iran, which reportedly began on February 28, raising regional tensions.
