Which power plant is producing electricity at what cost per unit?

ISLAMABAD – Details of electricity production costs at power plants across Pakistan have been tabled in the Senate, revealing significant differences between the cost of hydropower generation and that of private independent power producers (IPPs).

According to documents presented in the Senate, the price of electricity generated by WAPDA dams is Rs 2.70 paise per unit, while the price of electricity from private IPPs has exceeded Rs 34 per unit.

The government paid WAPDA Rs 186 billion for 34.5 billion units of electricity, the documents said. In contrast, private IPPs received Rs 1,040 billion for supplying 49.8 billion units.

The documents further revealed that more than Rs 1300 billion was paid to IPPs in capacity charges during the current financial year.

According to the details provided to the Senate, the Tarbela hydel power project emerged as the cheapest source of electricity generation at Rs 2.70 paise per unit.

Mangla hydel power project generated electricity at Rs 3 75 paise per unit, while the combined average cost of electricity generated by all dams was Rs 5 39 paise per unit.

The documents also revealed different prices among other sources of electricity. Electricity from Chashma Nuclear Power Plant was provided at Rs 6 76 paise per unit while the cost of electricity generated from locally sourced Thar coal is Rs 19 03 paise per unit.

The cost was considerably higher for plants using imported coal. Electricity from Sahiwal Coal Power Plant reached Rs 34 17 paise per unit while Port Qasim Power Plant generated electricity at Rs 32 16 paise per unit.
