Who is General Amir Raza? Pakistan’s new four-star general is heading the Strategic Command.
Lieutenant General Amir Raza was promoted to the rank of four-star general and assumed charge as the country’s first commander of the National Strategic Command.
The appointment puts General Raza among the country’s top military decision-makers, tasked with overseeing one of Pakistan’s most important commands.

General Aamir was commissioned into the Pakistan Army’s elite 6th Lancers in the 80s, and served for nearly 4 decades in the Army’s most demanding operational, command and strategic roles. His career took him from commanding frontline combat formations to the most influential positions at General Headquarters (GHQ), reflecting a steady rise through the military hierarchy.
Throughout his career, General Raza commanded formations at various levels of the army. His field assignments include:
- 6th Lancer Regiment
- Armored Brigade
- Infantry Brigade deployed in South Waziristan
- Infantry Division
- IV Cover Lahore
Before his latest promotion, he was serving as the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) at GHQ Rawalpindi, one of the most powerful staff appointments in the Army responsible for coordinating operations and intelligence at the highest level.
General Amir Raza’s career is beyond the command of the battlefield.
He served as Chief of Staff, II Corps, Director General, Directorate of Arms and Equipment, and Chairman, Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT).
His tenure at heavy industries Taxila, which began in April 2020, placed him at the center of Pakistan’s indigenous defense production, overseeing one of the country’s largest military manufacturing organizations responsible for armored vehicles, tanks and defense equipment.
He graduated from the Command and Staff College, Quetta National Defense University (NDU), Islamabad, he also holds a degree in International Relations from the University of Nottingham, UK, and completed higher studies in War, Strategy and National Security at NDU.
General Raza has also played an important role in shaping the future generations of Pakistan Army officers.
He served as Instructor in School of Armor and Mechanized Warfare, Director of Faculty of Research and Doctrinal Studies, Chief Instructor in Command and Staff College Quetta.
These appointments made him one of the army’s senior instructors responsible for developing operational doctrine and preparing officers for higher command.
In October 2022, General Aamir Raza was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General before taking command of IV Corps Lahore in May 2023. He was later appointed Chief of the General Staff, one of the most influential positions in the army, overseeing strategic planning, operational coordination and military preparations from the GHQ.
With his promotion to the rank of four-star general, General Amir Raza now becomes the first commander of the National Strategic Command, a newly created position that further strengthens Pakistan’s strategic command structure.
