ISLAMABAD – Muharram 1448 AH is set to begin on May 17, bringing the possibility of a change in important religious dates and a four-day holiday for government employees.
9th Muharram will now be observed on Thursday, June 25 and 10th Muharram (Day of Ashura) on Friday, June 26, after which the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) will be observed regularly and government employees are likely to have four consecutive days off.
The federal government declared public holiday on both 9th and 10th of Muharram to ease security arrangements and ensure holding of religious gatherings, majlis and processions across the country.
Officials are yet to issue a formal notification to confirm the revised schedule of public holidays. The final schedule will be announced by the federal government, which will outline the administrative and security arrangements for Muharram across the country.
KP government declared 1st Muharram 1448 AH as a separate public holiday across the province. The Provincial Administration Department has issued an official notification confirming the first date of the Islamic month as a holiday across the province.
The development comes as authorities prepare to tighten security measures during Muharram, especially on the 9th and 10th, which are observed as days of religious significance across the country.
