Iran-US deal: Pakistan not interested in headline diplomacy
ISLAMABAD – Security sources have said that Pakistan is dealing with a very complex issue involving Iran and the US, stressing that the country’s role has been that of a mediator to promote peace and stability.
Talking to reporters, senior security officials said that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s only interest in this matter is to ensure regional peace and stability. He warned that if the conflict is not stopped, it could have serious consequences for the region and beyond.
Reports say that Pakistan is not interested in “headline diplomacy” and has met all the requirements for mediation. He further said that the international community is gradually recognizing Pakistan’s role in reducing tensions.
According to the authorities, real victory is achieved when a conflict is resolved without fighting. Acknowledging the cooperation of countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt and United Arab Emirates, he said that these countries supported Pakistan’s efforts to establish peace.
Pakistan maintains separate and constructive relations with Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United States, while also seeking good relations with Afghanistan. He said that the recent visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi to India has nothing to do with Pakistan, stressing that Islamabad does not view international relations narrowly.
Pakistan played a balanced and responsible role during the recent regional crisis, which helped maintain the confidence of all parties. The diplomatic efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir strengthened confidence in Pakistan’s neutrality and positive engagement.
He warned that a wider conflict would adversely affect energy supplies, the global economy and regional security, with consequences felt by both rich and poor countries. Officials also praised the Pakistani media for acting responsibly throughout the situation, noting that official communications were measured and consistent.
Security sources added that diplomatic engagements, including the Field Marshal’s visit to Iran, played an important role in de-escalating tensions and building confidence, enhancing Pakistan’s position as a credible and effective regional actor.
Regarding security, officials said that a total of 32,092 intelligence-based operations were conducted across Pakistan till June 15, 2026. They reported 2,170 terrorist incidents, of which 64 percent occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 34 percent in Balochistan. According to the data, 1861 terrorists were killed while 640 armed forces, law enforcement personnel and civilians were martyred. Of the militants killed, 862 were killed in operations linked to Afghanistan, while 999 were killed inside Pakistan.
The sources reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to combating terrorism and said that the country’s main concern is with terrorist elements rather than the people of neighboring countries. He also denied reports of any meeting with former Prime Minister Imran Khan and vowed that those responsible for the May 9 incidents would be brought to justice.
