Punjab has only 5 public toilets for transgenders, 10 for disabled, LHC says

LAHORE – The Lahore High Court was told that there are only five public toilets for transgenders and ten for the disabled in Punjab.

This disclosure was made by the Secretary Local Government during the hearing of the application filed by the Judicial Activism Panel presided over by Justice Raheel Kamran Shaikh.

Advocate Azhar Siddique argued that citizens are facing severe problems due to lack of public toilets across Punjab. He further said that separate facilities for transgenders and disabled persons are also not adequately available and requested the court to seek a detailed report from the authorities.

Following the court order, Secretary Local Government submitted a report on the construction and status of public toilets across the province.

According to the report, there are currently 1,420 public toilets in Punjab, of which 1,293 are functional while 127 are inactive. It added that 672 toilets are reserved for men and 568 for women. However, only five are available for transgender people and ten for people with disabilities.

The court directed the lawyer to give detailed arguments at the next hearing.
